Sometimes, it is like our brain is a washing machine. Did you know the part of the washing machine that moves the clothes about in the water is called the agitator? Such a perfect word! When overwhelmed, it is like our brain is full of all kinds of things and there is an agitator whose job is simply to keep things stirred up. We spin and spin and get anxious and get less done.
When you are feeling overwhelmed, the very best thing to do is to sit down. Sit still. Close your eyes just for a minute. Take a deep breath. Stop trying to multi-task. Breathe and tell yourself that you can do this – get calm and focused.
In part, we feel overwhelmed because we feel out of control. Taking a moment to remind yourself that you are indeed in control of many things in your life can help you feel more settled. You can fix things. You can change things.
