2) Decluttering as Therapy?
Huh? Yes, much of what clutter is representing is anxiety, sadness, worry, and other emotions.
See that paper over there on the counter? Did you leave them there because you are worried you might forget to take care of the chores they represent?
And what about that box in the corner full of grandmother’s old things? Afraid of too many memories? Believe it or not, most of the studies on decluttering show that you will actually feel BETTER once you work on putting things in their rightful place.
The papers piling on the counter: go through them, toss what isn’t important, the rest go in your in bin so you can start working on them.
Grandma’s things: Let yourself grieve as you go through them, save the ones you want to actually use or display and then let the rest go – Grandma will always be in your heart, but I’m pretty sure she doesn’t want to sit in a box in the corner!
