While on the surface, it seems like matching your priorities with your goals would be a given. But, on closer inspection, is that really true for you?
An easy check to see if you are in alignment is to grab a pen and paper for a quick exercise. On the front of your paper, make a list of the five things that you spend the most time doing. What really eats up your time? Is it emails? Phone calls? Research? Filing? Playing janitor and trying to keep things in order?
Next, flip your paper over and make a totally new list. Erase that first list from your mind. Now make a list of the five things you LOVE about your job or career. What things make you excited about the day? What do you wish you could do more of? What are you really, really good at?
Now compare the two lists. Is there anything on the two lists that are the same? While we all have to do a few things we are not fond of, ideally your lists should have quite a few matches.
Is the time you are spending leading you to the job or life you really want? Taking an honest look at how you spend your time verses how you want to spend your time is a great way to set new priorities.
Until next time …
