When was the last time you purged your files? Are you running out of room in your file drawers? Is your desk piled with items ‘to be filed’? You’re probably thinking you don’t have time to purge your file, you don’t have to complete it in one day…but you do have to finish.
Here are a few of my tricks for organizing my files.
1. Take Action-as soon as I get mail I take action on it immediately. For example, for bills I put the coupon portion in the envelope which immediately goes into my bill paying center. The statement is immediately filed-current date on top.
2. Keep only current files handy. In my office I only have current files. Anything that is from a previous year get’s filed in a Bankers box and stored elsewhere.
3. You don’t have to keep every piece of paper. Go paperless. Check to see if you can get the material or statement online.
4. Use a label marker to label your files. It cuts down on searching for paper and you’re being consistent throughout.
What are some of your best filing techniques?
